The festive season is a time for joy, relaxation, and making memories with loved ones. After a long and busy year, many of us are planning a well-deserved break—whether it’s a countryside escape, a seaside holiday, or a trip overseas. But before you lock up and leave, it’s important to make sure your home is safe and secure. At Insure City, we care about your peace of mind. Here’s a practical guide to help you protect your property while you’re away.
Your Pre-Holiday Home Safety Checklist:
- Close all taps to prevent leaks or water damage.
- Turn off gas bottles at the source, not just at appliances (exception: fridge/freezer if gas-powered).
- Empty your fridge and freezer of perishables to avoid unpleasant surprises.
- Switch off unused electrical outlets at the wall socket.
- Secure all windows and doors. If you have a roaming cat, leave its favourite window slightly open and secured.
- Use surge protector plugs for your fridge and freezer to safeguard against power fluctuations.
- Ask a trusted person to check in regularly, even a quick visit shows movement and deters intruders.
- Close all interior doors (bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.) for added safety.
- Never leave spare keys inside the house, especially for safes or entry doors.
- Clear your mailbox or have someone collect your mail to avoid signalling that you’re away.
- If you have a lapa, hose it down thoroughly before leaving. Fire-retardant treatment helps, but extra precaution is always advisable.
- Leave your contact details and an emergency number with a trusted neighbour. If possible, provide them with a gate remote or key for emergency access, especially in case of fire or other urgent situations.
